A RECENT EMAIL REGARDING THE ORB COMPENDIUM: Got my copy of Orb on Friday, wasn't sure what to expect from it, but that cover wouldn't let me pass it up. Like everything Hoffman I own to date, Orb did not disappoint. Your sketchbook stuff, seeing how you generate ideas was really interesting and informative. There is a quality to your pencil art, finished and sketchbook that is just candy for the eyes, regardless of subject matter. The essays answered some questions I had wanted to ask but figured had been beaten to death already, enjoyed the insight to things that influenced your work, reading about the genesis of tura satana and why you no longer work for the publishers. Loved the ink drawings. So many ink drawings, looks like the black magic series is just the tip of the spear. I knew you were prolific - the paintings in Odyssey alone would constitute a life's work for most artists appears to be just a selection of your work. Books like Orb help fill in the gaps, it's just a great book. I was delighted by Remarque ink drawing on the back cover, it's gorgeous. Wish I could have followed it in magazine format but I'm so glad you decided to collect Orb into one volume for posterity. Hopefully many people will discover it and enjoy like I do.
